Honoring the Legacy of Hidden Figures: Inspiring the Next Generation at Lake Forest Charter
On September 18, 2024, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, Speaker Mike Johnson, and NASA Administrator Bill Nelson awarded the Congressional Gold Medal to honor the women who were instrumental in NASA’s success during the Space Race, including Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Dr. Christine Darden—made famous by the book and movie Hidden Figures. These trailblazing women made groundbreaking contributions to space exploration, overcoming significant racial and gender barriers along the way.
Ms. Sanders, Lake Forest Charter’s esteemed science teacher and granddaughter of Katherine Johnson, attended the national ceremony in Washington, D.C., celebrating her grandmother’s enduring legacy. In honor of this momentous occasion, Lake Forest Charter also held its own ceremony, where staff, students, and the community gathered to pay tribute to Katherine Johnson’s achievements and the inspiration she continues to provide. Ms. Sanders was recognized for her commitment to carrying forward her grandmother’s legacy by empowering the next generation of STEM leaders.
The event at Lake Forest Charter served as a reminder of the importance of nurturing young minds to excel in science and innovation. Through its strong STEM programs and commitment to academic excellence, the school remains dedicated to fostering the same spirit of curiosity and perseverance that defined Katherine Johnson’s life and work.
Leadership and Social Justice Program Connects Students with Tulane Mentors
Ms. R. Brown is leading a transformative program that pairs students with mentors from Tulane University to foster leadership development and social justice awareness. During weekly 50-minute in-person workshops, students engage in discussions and activities that help them grow as leaders, guided by their Tulane mentors.
In addition to these workshops, students benefit from 1:1 mentoring sessions, where they learn about college life, receive advice on excelling in junior high and high school, and explore strategies for future academic success. This program is designed to build meaningful relationships, offering students the support, guidance, and networking opportunities needed to thrive both personally and professionally. By connecting with experienced mentors, Lake Forest students are gaining valuable insights to help them navigate their academic journey with confidence and purpose.

NFL's Malcolm Mitchell and Cox Inspire Young Eagles with the Gift of Reading
Lake Forest Charter was honored to host Super Bowl Champion and literacy advocate Malcolm Mitchell for a special visit with our 4th graders. Mitchell captivated the students with a reading from his latest children’s book, A World Within Reach, which follows the journey of Mylo Maxey, a young boy who uncovers how internet access and digital literacy can open doors to new opportunities and adventures.
In a generous gesture, each 4th grader received their own copy of the book, a gift from Mitchell’s Share the Magic Foundation. This sparked excitement and a renewed love for reading among our students. Mitchell’s dedication to promoting literacy underscores the vital role that reading plays in shaping a child's future, and his visit left a lasting impression on our young Eagles, inspiring them to explore the limitless possibilities that reading brings. We are deeply grateful to Malcolm Mitchell for sharing his passion and igniting a love for learning in our students.
