Pages to Pumpkins: Bringing Characters to Life
What do pumpkins and favorite book characters have in common? For our 5th graders, they became the perfect pair in a recent ELA project that sparked both creativity and critical thinking. After diving into engaging grade-level novels, students took on the exciting challenge of analyzing their favorite characters and transforming pumpkins into imaginative representations of them.
This unique blend of literature and art turned reading into a hands-on adventure. From clever designs to thoughtful details, each pumpkin told a story, reflecting the students’ understanding and love for the characters they chose.
The project didn’t just celebrate creativity—it highlighted the incredible ways our 5th-grade Eagles connect with their reading and express their ideas. Thanks to the thoughtful guidance of their teachers, this activity became a memorable learning experience that brought literature to life in an extraordinary way!
Igniting Curiosity: LFC Students Explore the Power of Energy
Imagine learning about the energy that powers your world directly from the experts who make it happen. That’s exactly what our 6th to 8th graders experienced during November’s Black Energy Awareness Month (B.E.A.M.) Power Circuit event.
Thanks to the Greater New Orleans Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE), our students spent the day connecting with professionals from top organizations like Entergy, Shell, Atmos Gas, and local engineering firms. In small, interactive sessions, they explored cutting-edge energy innovations, discovered exciting career opportunities, and gained insight into how energy shapes our lives.
The buzz of excitement was unmistakable as students dove into hands-on activities and eagerly shared their new knowledge. This event wasn’t just educational—it was inspiring, opening doors to future possibilities while sparking curiosity about the world of energy.
A huge thanks to AABE for creating such a meaningful experience for our students. And hats off to our young scholars for their enthusiasm and engagement in this one-of-a-kind learning opportunity!
LFC Musicians Shine on the State Stage
Two of our talented middle school musicians have achieved an incredible milestone! After a challenging audition process, they earned the honor of performing in the 2024-25 Louisiana All-State Middle School Orchestra Concert.
This accomplishment reflects their hard work, dedication, and passion for music, as well as the exceptional guidance from our LFC music program. These young performers are a testament to the power of perseverance and creativity.
Join us in celebrating this exciting achievement and wishing them the very best as they prepare for their big moment on the state stage!
7th Graders Dig Deep: Exploring Bone Diseases and Injuries
What do stories and skeletons have in common? For Ms. Cager’s 7th-grade scholars, they were the foundation of an exciting research project inspired by the book Written in Bone by Sally M. Walker. After completing the 2nd-quarter text, students dove into the fascinating world of bone diseases and injuries, conducting detailed research to understand their causes, effects, and impact on the human body.
The results were impressive! Students presented their findings through creative and visually engaging displays that illustrated how different conditions leave their mark—often permanently—on our skeletal system. This hands-on project not only connected literature and science but also encouraged students to think critically and apply their knowledge in new and meaningful ways.
And, of course, there was an important takeaway: protect your bones! Through this project, students learned the value of taking care of their bodies, one bone at a time.
Bravo to our 7th-grade scholars for their hard work and to Ms. Cager for guiding them through such an impactful and interdisciplinary learning experience!

A Night of Discovery: STEM Family Night Inspires Over 600 Attendees
What happens when science, technology, engineering, and math take center stage? On November 21st, over 600 students, parents, and guardians came together for an unforgettable evening of exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning at STEM Family Night, hosted in partnership with STEM NOLA.
From stepping into the awe-inspiring StarLab planetarium to creating circuits, coding robots, and experimenting with virtual reality, scholars in grades K-8 had endless opportunities to dive into STEM like never before. Families marveled at exciting demonstrations, including elephant toothpaste experiments, dry ice reactions, and even a live sheep heart dissection. The night also featured 25 engaging STEM stations that connected directly to math and science standards, offering a blend of fun and education that sparked curiosity at every turn.
Activities like sound physics, engineering design challenges, and coding brought families together while inspiring young innovators to dream big. This event wasn’t just about learning—it was about igniting a passion for discovery and showing our scholars that they have the power to be creators, problem-solvers, and future entrepreneurs.
A huge thank-you to STEM NOLA and the incredible LFC staff for making this evening an inspiring success. The future of STEM is bright, and we’re proud to see our students leading the way!
